Home Sweet Home uses VR’s ability to represent scale in some impressive ways, with one Preta in particular that looms over the player, towering impossibly into the sky. After one level that I had meticulously explored, I was shocked to see that I had only found three of eighteen collectable items. While I thought that I had been picking my way slowly through the environments for clues, I was clearly looking in the wrong places.

The majority of Home Sweet Home is extremely linear, following Tim as he explores a series of environments in his quest to locate Jane, avoiding ghosts and solving puzzles. The vaguest sketches of story are revealed through environmental clues , but many of these story items are so well hidden that the story might go right over many players heads. So while I might rant for several paragraphs about things that I found frustrating about Home Sweet Home, I want to make it clear that I’m recommending the game anyhow. It’s not the greatest game ever made, but it is one hell of a horror experience. As you wander through frightening environments, surrounded on all sides by foreboding images, silent triggers start yelping inside of you.

To make a comparison,Home Sweet Home reminds me ofAlien Isolation somewhat, but a much more truncated version that highlights its issues more as the player doesn’t get room to breathe and get absorbed into the fiction. The game takes the time to explain the lore that comes into play through environmental storytelling. Of particular interest and importance is the legend of the haunting “Preta”, a restless and vengeful spirit that is forever hungry and thirsty. The entire game is steeped in Thai imagery, from the newspaper clippings to the graffiti on the walls, and the unique setting adds to the sense of displacement and disorientation for western players.
Beneath the promising concept, Home Sweet Home is as generic and bare bones as it gets for horror titles on PlayStation 4. Playing it with PSVR might be a game-changer, but without it, expect a mediocre and pedestrian first-person adventure. With only a few cheap jump-scares and some clever space twisting, this is only for people who are desperate for some scares. However, half the time there will be an imminent threat to Tim’s life in the areas you need to search who may or may not have some dodgy A.I. This makes certain encounters a little frustrating and left me exasperated when trying to find a solution a few times.
Review: Home Sweet Home – PS4/PSVR
Before you even realize what’s happening, the game expects you to spin around, run into another room, realize you can hide in lockers, then hide in said locker, all within seconds. If you don’t do it it right, you die immediately, then have to reload and watch the setup again. Maybe you’ll get it right away, but more than likely you won’t, and that sets the stage for a lot of the Home Sweet Home experience. It’s full of trial and error, mess up once and you’re reloading from the last checkpoint stealth or pseudo-action sequences. And being such a dark and murky game, sometimes you’ll just bumble into a reload situation because it’s hard to see what you’re even supposed to do. Home Sweet Home does an excellent job of creating a solid foundation for fear, yet overly relies on cheap jump scares to carry the horror.

This is a game with some really good ideas and sequences, but it also make too many mistakes that could’ve been avoided quite easily. Even the VR implementation feels quite rushed, although the experience is interesting overall. There are still some concerns with repetitive game design and enemy awareness, but this is definitely one scary experience in the PS VR headset.
Item specifics
Unfortunately, most solutions will be to find an item that grants access to a path and move to the next complication. Home Sweet Home is pretty linear and most doors, stairways, and windows will be inaccessible to Tim. You’ll always have a clear picture on what your surroundings are in any given level, but some of the puzzles are not very clear. "Home Sweet Home is a solid modern horror game which effectively utilizes Thai culture and mythology to create an unnerving, atmospheric, and surreal experience." An intriguing horror experience with some neat ideas, but it doesn’t seem to have the muscle to make those ideas work as well as they could. As she constantly slides the box cutter up and down, the noise reverberates throughout the area and put a chill in my spine every time. Doors will randomly close or open when you pass by them, items will move subtly in a dark room, and even a giant frickin’ Attack on Titan wannabe will smash the house suddenly. "Home Sweet Home is one of the most intense PlayStation VR compatible horror games released to date, and it’s ready to take you on an experience you’ll never forget."
Beyond exploring and solving puzzles, the bulk of the gameplay involves playing hide and seek with the various spooks and ghosts that stalk Tim. There is no combat to speak of in Home Sweet Home, with Tim turning tail and hiding every time he sees a spirit. Home Sweet Home is a great PSVR game and a good regular title.
At one point, after I had been running and hiding a bit too strenuously, the first-person viewpoint suddenly turned on me and I started feeling a bit nauseous. I took off the headgear and found that Home Sweet Home plays very well in “flat” mode . Home Sweet Home is a fairly short game, and most players will probably complete it in a sitting or two. It should also be noted that though it is being promoted and sold as a PS VR game, Home Sweet Home can be played perfectly well outside of VR.
It is this is dynamic that allows Home Sweet Home to turn the screws of suspense, taking players’ breath away with heart-stopping sequences and wicked jump-scares. When you are hiding in a locker, peering through the slots as some awful presence stalks about the room moaning for your blood, it is easy to forget that this is “just a game”. I found myself literally holding my breath, desperate to not be discovered by the awful chittering spirit that was searching for me. Each of Home Sweet Home’s malevolent spirits also has a distinct and disturbing audio cue designed to have players darting for the nearest locker, drain, or over-sized vase as soon as they hear them.

If your experience seems a little light, you can choose to charter a bareboat and hire a professional captain for the first few days and then continue the rest of your charter on your own when you feel comfortable. • Challenging Gameplay – Focus on stealth gameplay which requires player’s skill to overcome. Home Sweet Home doesn’t bother much with a setup, and that’s part of the story. All you know in the beginning is that your wife, Jane, is missing, and after a night of coping with grief at the bottom of a bottle , you wake up in a building you don’t recognize. While making your way through the empty space, full of rot and debris, you realize you aren’t alone in the worst possible way. Armed with only a flashlight and your wits, your only goal is to get out.
Home Sweet Home is an around 4 and a half hour long first person survival horror game where you play as Tim in search of his wife who has disappeared.. This is one of the first horror games I have ever played. Me an my friend just wanted to play a good horror game to get scared and this game did the trick. REALLY hope there is a second one or theending was pointless.

Very little is interactive, and what is interactive is immediately relevant. This includes your path, the problem of the moment, and of course your tools to deal with the threat. This is not an impressive game from a visual fidelity or content volume standpoint, but where it does excel is its sound design.
